Maybe you already heard that matcha green tea is very good for you, but still have no idea why? Read this article to find out more ont he topic.

Lately, I became very concerned about a healthy lifestyle and healthy eating. I’m trying to find out as much as possible superfoods and healthy foods that can help me care about my health and body.

I love coffee, but it is not really healthy, so I was looking for somethings that I can drink instead of it.

And I found matcha tea and I’m TOTALLY in LOVE with it. It is not only delicious, but full to the brim with health benefits. Maybe you already heard of matcha, or even tried it once or twice, but you are still wondering why people are so excited about this drink. I have heard so many people say that they tried matcha and didn’t like it, but when I made them a cup the proper way, they loved it! So if you’ve tried matcha and didn’t like it, or if you haven’t tried it before, then I hope that once you’ve learned more about it, you’ll be tempted to give it try yourself!

Let’s start with the basics.

What is matcha?

Like green tea, matcha comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. However, it’s grown differently and has a unique nutrient profile.

Farmers grow matcha by covering their tea plants 20–30 days before harvest to avoid direct sunlight. This increases chlorophyll production, boosts the amino acid content, and gives the plant a darker green hue.

The next difference is in matcha consumption. When you drink green tea, you are drinking the water that the leaves were soaked in. But with matcha tea – you are drinking the ground up leaves themselves, because matcha tea is a powder. That means you are getting 10x the health benefits of normal green tea, or that you would have to drink 10 cups of loose-leaf green tea to get the same amount of antioxidants, L-theanine, vitamin C, carotene, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and overall nutritional value you get in one cup of matcha. 

Matcha vs Coffee:

Like coffee, matcha tea have caffeine, but your body processes it in a totally different way. Caffeine from coffee releases very fast, with the first sip of coffee you have the strike of energy. And the caffeine in matcha is released slowly. Matcha is also better for your digestive tract as it serves as a probiotic rather than causing irritation the way coffee does. Finally, matcha is a much better source of energy. It gives you 4 to 6 hours of energy compared to the 1 to 3 you get from coffee.

Coffee caffeine increases cortisol and epinephrine at rest. That levels of cortisol (after coffee consumption) are similar to those people have during acute stress. In other words, drinking coffee re-creates stress conditions for the body, which causes even more damage because most of us have quite a stressful life. The matcha caffeine is different, it boosts the energy without releasing cortisol or epinephrine!

What are the different grades of matcha?

Culinary vs Ceremonial

Matcha tea has its grades from the highest to the lowest ones. The lower grade matcha tastes more bitter and usually used for the culinary. And the highest grade has more floral taste and that one is for matcha teas – the ceremonial one. While looking for the high quality matcha tea check out the labels. The hint that can help you recognize the heigher quality for the lower is the color of the powder, the darker the powder the higher the quality.


Culinary grade matcha, also known as food grade, is used for the foods production, beacase od the cheaper price. The lower grade match tea taste is bitter, but using the additional ingridients you can cover the extra bitterness. The health benefits don’t change, but the flavor does. You can typically find matcha in desserts such as smoothies, baked goods, ice cream, mochi or cream based products like mousse and cheesecake. 


Ceremonial grade matcha is more commonly used for preparing the popular matcha tea or tea lattes. This type of matcha has a much more pleasant flavor, and can taste wonderful with just adding some water. It is also the best option for tea lattes. The leaves used in ceremonial grade matcha are generally less mature than in culinary grade matcha which means they include less tannins and will have a less bitter taste.

Although most of these studies focused on green tea extract, matcha comes from the same plant and should have the same effect.
